Abstract:Ethnic minority ballads in China, which are collectively created, orally transmitted, and continually refined by people of various ethnic groups, constitute an integral part of fine traditional Chinese culture. These ballads not only vividly recount the past but also profoundly influence the present and the future, playing a significant role in forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation, inheriting Chinese cultural heritage and promoting exchanges and mutual learning among other civilizations. The first large-scale and active collection and collation of ethnic minority ballads in the history of China took place during the period of the New Democratic Revolution, primarily led by outstanding Communist Party of China members and vanguard intellectuals. Studying these collection and collation activities may shed light on the compilers' awareness of Chinese culture and disclose the historical trajectory of the exchanges, communications, and integration embodied in these ethnic minority ballads, which can be conducive to elucidating the remarkable continuity, innovation, uniformity, inclusiveness, and peaceful nature of Chinese civilization. The collection and collation of ethnic minority ballads during this period reflected the Chinese cultural awareness of outstanding Communist Party of China members and vanguard intellectuals that were impacted by the ballad movement. Moreover,it marked the first large-scale effort in history to transform oral literature of diverse ethnic groups into written literature, playing a crucial role in carrying forward Chinese cultural heritage as well as inheriting and developing fine traditional Chinese culture.Although ethnic minority ballads originate from various local areas and thus embody the characteristics of “ local knowledge,” the ballads of each ethnic group are not isolated. Their emergence, development, and maturation are the result of exchanges, communications, and integration among the cultures of different ethnic groups. By tracing the roots of tradition and extracting and showcasing the cultural essence of the exchanges, communications and integration among these diverse ethnic groups, this article demonstrates that the splendid Chinese civilization is created by the people of all ethnic groups in China, which is of great significance in forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.Throughout history, the members of all ethnic peoples in China have jointly created a splendid Chinese civilization. From the ethnic minority ballads collected, collated, and published by outstanding Communist Party of China members and vanguard intellectuals in the period of the New Democratic Revolution, it is evident that, despite cultural differences in different areas in China, they are primarily characterized by cultural exchanges, communications, and integration based on a shared cultural identity. Different areas in China have formed a cultural landscape centered around Chinese culture. Specifically, the shared cultural symbols and images in the ballads of various ethnic groups include ancient myths, legends, historical figures, literary characters, traditional Chinese virtues, proverbs, and epigrams. These commonalities in the ballads of various ethnic groups can awaken the identity and collective sentiments of community members, foster historical consensus among them, provide emotional ties that closely bind people of all ethnic groups, promote their unity like the seeds of a pomegranate, and thereby contribute to forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.
